How to tell it apart
The stilt sandpiper is a small shorebird. The scientific name is from Ancient Greek; the genus name kalidris or skalidris is a term used by Aristotle for a gray-colored waterside bird. The specific himantopus means "strap foot" or "thong foot", and also refers to the stilt.

Where to find it
- Breeding range
- High and low Arctic tundra to taiga edge of north Nearctic: North Slope of Alaska and north Canada to south Victoria I. (north-central Canada); also locally west coasts of Hudson and James bays
- Non-breeding range
- Coastal and inland Mexico and throughout the West Indies; in Central America mainly along Pacific coast; coastal South America to Peru and north Brazil, and in pampas of north-central Argentina
