The short-billed dowitcher, like its congener, the long-billed dowitcher, is a medium-sized, stocky, long-billed shorebird in the family Scolopacidae.

- North temperate bogs in tundra and muskeg of Nearctic: Gulf of Alaska and inland south-central Alaska, south-west Yukon and montane north-west British Columbia (north-west Canada); north-central Alberta to west Manitoba (central Canada); south-west Hudson and James bays to west Labrador (east-central Canada)
- Non-breeding range
- Accidental vagrant to Australia (very few records, east.g. NSW 1999).
