How to tell it apart
This small, slender dove (19–23 cm) is easily recognised by its soft grey-brown plumage and fine black barring across the neck, breast, and shoulders, creating a delicate scaly appearance. The face and throat are a pale blue-grey, highlighted by a conspicuous ring of bare blue-grey skin around the eye. In flight, the long, tapered tail reveals white outer feathers, while the underparts show a pale greyish-pink wash. Sexes appear identical throughout the year, whereas juveniles are slightly duller and browner with less pronounced markings. Its call is a familiar, high-pitched, and melodic "doodle-doo" or "peace-ful-dove," a common sound of the Australian bush. A terrestrial bird, the Peaceful Dove is typically encountered in pairs or small groups foraging for tiny seeds on bare ground or in short grass with a rapid, head-bobbing gait. When startled, it flushes with a characteristic loud whirring or clattering of the wings, flying in a swift, undulating pattern before retreating to a low branch. It frequents a wide variety of open habitats, including grassy woodlands, scrub, and urban parks, provided there is a reliable water source nearby. It is widespread across northern and eastern Australia but is absent from Tasmania and the driest interior deserts. To distinguish it from similar species, note that the Bar-shouldered Dove is much larger with a bright copper nape, while the Diamond Dove is smaller and daintier with white wing spots and a distinctive red eye-ring. Unlike the introduced Spotted Dove, the Peaceful Dove lacks a large patterned neck patch and is significantly smaller in build.
