How to tell it apart
The European goldfinch or simply the goldfinch is a small passerine bird in the finch family that is native to the Palearctic zone in Europe, northern Africa, and western Asia. It has been introduced to other areas, including Australia, New Zealand, Uruguay and the United States.

- Temperate to subtropical west and central Palearctic in woods, scrub and gardens: British Isles, south Scandinavia east through central and south European Russia and north-west Kazakhstan; in south to Iberian Pen., Madeira and Canary Is. (Macaronesia, west of north Africa), Morocco to north Egypt (north Africa), Mediterranean, Turkey, Israel, north Iran.
